Binoculars

You can hold an 8x magnification steady in your hand; with a 10x, you will already see your own pulse and without support the image will blur. A larger objective lens lets in more light, so at dusk and in the woods you will spot details that a smaller device swallows, but you pay for it in weight. For hiking, a compromise around 8x42 is therefore most commonly chosen. Check the close focus distance too, it comes in handy closer than you expect.
