Straps

Compression straps reduce the packed volume of a camping mat and sleeping bag while preventing them from unrolling in your backpack. When attaching gear to the outside, make sure the strap doesn't cross pockets you need to access while walking, and ensure the end doesn't flap into a wheel or branches. The buckle is the weakest link: a plastic one is enough for camping, but for rougher use look for a thicker profile or a metal version.
