An avalanche probe follows up on the transceiver…
it confirms the exact spot and especially the depth, which tells you where to start digging and how much snow awaits you. A short probe is useless if the victim is buried deeper, so choose a length of at least two and a half metres, preferably longer for steep slopes. Aluminium is cheaper and stiffer, carbon is lighter. How quickly you can assemble the probe in gloves is also crucial — you can handle a cable with a quick-tensioning system blindly. Length markings will instantly show you the depth.
