Adjust the lever so you can reach it with one finger without letting go of the grip…
for a smaller hand, use the reach screw to bring the lever closer to the handlebars. The position on the handlebars is the second half of the equation: the lever should be an extension of your forearm so your wrist does not bend at an unnatural angle during a steep descent. For hydraulics, the lever must match the brake system and fluid type, and for cable versions, the pull ratio. After every crash, check if the lever has rotated.
