4 productsA disc brake brakes reliably even in the wet and mud, as the rotor is away from the water running off the tyre; a rim brake is lighter, cheaper and easy to adjust, but its effectiveness drops noticeably in the rain.
Hydraulics transfer power via fluid, so one finger is enough and modulation is smoother, but they require occasional bleeding. The mechanical version is operated by a cable and you can fix it anywhere. Pads and rotors are consumable parts, so keep an eye on their thickness. For wet conditions and long descents, choose a larger rotor diameter; it dissipates heat better and provides more stable braking.

Use a three-layer system: 1) base layer (wicks away sweat), 2) mid layer (thermal insulation, fleece), 3) outer layer (waterproof and windproof membrane).
