Clipless pedals connect your shoe to the crank, so you can pull upwards too and your foot will not slip — however, they require getting used to, because clipping out requires a twist of the heel and almost everyone experiences their first falls at a standstill. You can adjust the tension required to clip out on most models; start on the lightest setting. A combination pedal has a platform on one side and a clipless mechanism on the other, which is handy for transitioning and city riding.
