Goat-hair mohair glides excellently and saves energy on long traverses, but grips less effectively on steep climbs and wears out faster.
Synthetics grip better and last longer, in exchange for a slower glide. A blend combines both and is usually a sensible choice for a first pair of climbing skins. Choose the width according to your ski so the edges remain free, otherwise you will not hold your line on a traverse. The glue is a weak point: do not leave frozen skins stuck together, dry them at room temperature, and store them with a protective foil.
