Trail poles are lighter than trekking poles, usually fixed or foldable into three sections so they disappear into your backpack during flat runs.
Derive the length from your height: when standing on flat ground, your elbow should form roughly a right angle; for a long climb, ones that are a few centimetres shorter are handy. A fixed length is lighter and will not slip; a telescopic pole adapts to the terrain. They make sense mainly for steep climbs and during descents, when they relieve your knees. Put the strap on so that you can lean on it with your palm.
